PULSE of NY Update
May 2009

It has been a busy first half of 2009 for PULSE of NY. As we move into our summer planning for the next year, we have many things on the table. We are now booking Family Centered Patient Advocacy Training for September, October and November. We can work with large or small groups to teach the family and friends of the patient to become part of the medical team and help advocate for safe, quality care. I have also been doing some one on one family work with the families of patients to help them advocate for their loved ones.

A new component of our training is Critical Communication. Thanks to the Compassionate Communication training by Anne Fleming and Barbara Singer of the South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation, I have been able to share some of the skills I am learning with medical professionals while on a year long speaking tour with AIU Holdings and the National Patient Safety Foundation.

Cities we will be traveling to include Nashville TN, Charlotte NC, Seattle WA, Philadelphia PA and Honolulu HI. Last month we were in Dallas, TX.

Other places I have recently spoken about the patient and family’s role in patient safety are at the Missouri Center for Patient Safety Conference, Florida Association for Healthcare Quality and John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek CA. In New York, I had the opportunity to speak at the Lutheran Medical Center and the Montefiore Medical Center.

On May 20 I will be participating in a Pre-Congress program at the National Patient Safety Foundation Congress in the Washington DC area. I will be speaking on “Community Engagement from the Patient and Family Perspective.” See the full program here. It’s still not too late to register!

PULSE of NY, has won the Long Island Women’s Agenda Organization of the Year and will be recognized at a reception on June 2.

In March 24 and 31, we held a workshop facilitated by PULSE board member Leslie Farrington MD on communication following a medical injury which received very positive feedback. This 4-hour interactive discussion was held over two evenings and was to help create a dialogue between patients who have experienced adverse events and medical providers on ways we can best communicate our concerns, feelings and needs. Other leaders in this workshop were Ken Snyder OTR/L and Monica Santoro RN, CPHRM, CPHQ.

Coming up in June:
PULSE of NY in partnership with St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions will be at the Freeport Library on Thursday, June 11 from 10-2:00 and on Monday, June 22 from 10-2:00 at the Wantagh Library. Participants are encouraged to bring their medications, vitamins and supplements. Pharmacists and pharmacy students from St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions will review your medication and answer your questions.

If you need any books, equipment or patient safety research, consider checking with Douglas Hall, our Florida representative. See the website at PULSE of Florida

I recently joined the board of LIPX, Long Island Patient Information eXchange and had the opportunity to attend my first board meeting.

LIPIX is an independent not-for-profit corporation established to develop a Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) where patient information can be shared, with the patient’s participation, with anyone from their medical team. To learn more go to www.lipix.org I would love to know what patients are thinking about this way of communication.

Finally, we have added to our website www.pulseamerica.org another page of pictures. If you want to be included, please send a photo, story and name to ilenecorina@aol.com.

Don’t forget to join the One is Number; The Starfish Campaign. Go to www.oneisanumber.org and learn more about it!
