PULSE of NY Receives Support from NY State Senator
LONG ISLAND, March 25 - PULSE of NY was granted $7,500 from State Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau County) to help make Long Islanders safe from medical errors. The funding recognizes contributions made by PULSE, a leading grassroots organization in patient safety.
As the former chair of the Senate Health Committee who worked with PULSE on patient-safety legislation, Hannon praised PULSE’s work. "PULSE of New York is a vital organization in our community. Its work toward reducing the rate of medical errors, by utilizing survivors of medical injuries as educators for both members of our community and professionals in our health care system, is invaluable," Hannon said. "As a direct result of the work of PULSE of New York, our patients are safer, our communication is more effective and our community partnerships with health care providers and institutions are stronger."
PULSE started in 1997 as a support group for patients and families harmed by medical errors. PULSE offered a safe place to talk about the medical injuries that shook people’s lives or killed their loved ones. Since then, PULSE has expanded its work to advocate for changes to the healthcare system by building strong alliances with medial professionals, healthcare administrators and hospitals.
"Senator Hannon has been instrumental in the patient-safety movement on Long Island. Not only has he supported our efforts, he really understands the healthcare culture and the urgency in making patients safe," said Ilene Corina, president of PULSE of NY.
PULSE trains people and their designated "advocates" to navigate the healthcare system. PULSE conducts workshops and one-one-trainings for patients, their friends and their families. The education focuses on learning safety precautions and using clear communication with medical professionals and at the bedside. Based on Long Island, PULSE has provided patient-safety programs throughout the country and in Guam.
